How soon can you visit a newborn, and how do you ask?
You would love to meet the baby, but you do not want to intrude. When to visit, how to ask, and what to do when the parents have a visiting page.
The birth announcement has arrived, or the news is in the family group chat. You are happy, you want to meet the baby, and you wonder: when can I actually come over? Tomorrow? Or is that too soon? There is no fixed rule, but there are a few things every parent is grateful for.
The first days belong to the family
The first two or three days after the birth are for the parents, the baby and the closest family: grandparents, brothers and sisters. The mother is recovering from the birth, feeding is getting started, and there are checkups from the midwife or nurse. If you are not close family, wait for an invitation or for the birth announcement.
- Close family: often in the first week, if the parents want that.
- Good friends: usually in the second week, or at the end of the first.
- Colleagues, neighbors and acquaintances: after the first week or two, up to about two months after the birth.
Coming later is never rude. After three weeks the parents are usually more rested, there is some routine, and you get a real conversation instead of a quick coffee between two feeds.
Always ask first
Never drop by unannounced, not even “just for a minute”. A baby does not keep a schedule, and a mother who has just fallen asleep does not want to be woken by the doorbell. Send a short message, and make it easy for the parents to say no.
- Congratulations on your son! We would love to come and meet him, but only when it suits you. No rush, just let us know.
- What wonderful news. Shall we come by in a week or two? Half an hour is plenty, and we will bring dinner.
- Congratulations! I will hear from you when it works. And if you would rather rest first: completely fine.
No reply? Do not send another message the next day. Parents of a newborn are on their phones at three in the morning to scroll, not to make plans. The answer will come.
Do the parents have a visiting page? Use it
More and more parents put a link or QR code in their birth announcement that leads to their own visiting page. It shows which times are open, and you choose one yourself. Do that, instead of sending a message anyway. The parents made that page precisely so they would not have to answer dozens of messages.
- Open the link or scan the QR code on the announcement.
- Choose an open time. If you are coming as a couple, choose one time together.
- Read the parents’ preferences: how long to stay, what is and is not welcome, whether they could use help with meals.
- Can no longer make it? Let them know in time, so the slot opens up again.
What time, and how long
Mornings are often taken up by checkups, and the early afternoon by a nap. For most families, somewhere between two and five in the afternoon works best. Stay half an hour, three quarters at most, and leave before you are asked to. If you have a cold or feel unwell, postpone your visit. Every parent will thank you for it.
Your first weeks, all in one place.
Guests book their visits, meals arrive on the right day, and everyone knows how to help. No group chat needed.
