What to bring when visiting a newborn: start with what the parents need
New parents get plenty of onesies. Here is how to choose a gift that really helps, and why a meal or an errand is often the best present of all.
You are going to meet the baby and you do not want to arrive empty-handed. So you find yourself in a baby shop between the soft toys and the onesies, wondering whether they already have them. They probably do. Most parents receive more newborn-size clothes in the first weeks than their baby can ever wear, while nobody is doing the grocery shopping.
A good gift for new parents does not start in a shop. It starts with the question of what this family needs this week.
Ask, or check whether there is a list
The simplest thing is to ask. “Is there anything you still need?” may feel awkward, but most parents appreciate it. Many parents also make a wish list, on their baby’s page or with a baby store. If there is a link in the birth announcement or in the message with the news, look there first. Pick something that nobody has taken yet, so the family does not end up with two identical mobiles.
A meal is the best gift
Ask almost any parent of a young baby and they will tell you the same thing: the food people brought was the best part. Nobody cooks in the first weeks, and takeout loses its charm after a few days. A pot of soup, a casserole or a batch of pasta sauce is a gift that is appreciated again every single day.
- Ask about dietary needs and allergies, especially if the mother is breastfeeding.
- Agree on a day, so three lasagnas do not arrive at once. If the parents have a meal schedule, choose an open day there.
- Bring it in a container that does not need to come back, with a note: what it is, how long it keeps and how to reheat it.
- Dropping it off is fine. You do not have to stay to be helpful.
Or give time instead of things
Taking on an errand is just as valuable. It costs you an hour and saves the parents an afternoon. Do not say “let me know if I can do anything”, because nobody ever does. Offer something specific.
- Do the grocery shopping, with their list.
- Walk the dog, twice this week.
- Take the older sibling to the playground for an afternoon.
- Run a load of laundry, empty the dishwasher or clean the bathroom.
- Hold the baby for an hour, so the mother can shower and sleep.
Still want to buy something? Go bigger or later
If you want to give something for the baby, buy clothes for six to twelve months instead of newborn size. There are never enough of those, just when the stream of gifts has long stopped. Other good choices: a book to read aloud, a gift card for the pharmacy, or something for the mother herself. A good hand cream, chocolate or a voucher for a massage. In these weeks she is often the forgotten main character.
Do not forget the older children. A small present for the new big sister means she gets a moment in the spotlight too, right when everyone only looks at the baby.
How much to spend
There is no set amount. Colleagues and neighbors usually give a card with something small; family and close friends often give more, or chip in together. But a homemade meal that costs a few dollars is often appreciated more than an expensive soft toy. It is not about what it costs, but about what it takes off the parents’ hands.
